ATLANTA (CBS ATLANTA) -

With its assortment of restaurants and clubs, Crescent Ave. in Midtown Atlanta is a hot spot.

"It's busy, it's happening, it's lots of people walking around hanging out," said Ruth Garcia.

But early Thursday morning, witnesses said a night of fun turned into violence.

Valery Clayton said she was walking to her car in the parking lot next to club Opera when she heard gunshots.

"It was like eight shots that rang out. Everyone was running everywhere," said Clayton.

Witnesses said it all started with a confrontation between two groups of men.

"One of the group of guys were hitting the others with bottles and metal rods, and then after that, they broke it up. One of the guys was like, you got it and the other dude was like, I got it and he started shooting in the air," said Amber Yancy.

Police said officers in the area responded to the scene and confronted the shooter,

"Police said drop your weapon. They told him three times and he didn't drop his weapon, so they shot him," said Yancy.

Investigators said the shooter was rushed to Grady Hospital after getting hit at least once in the chest. Another person was also wounded in the leg. Police said it's not clear who shot him. Garcia said she hopes the incident won't scare people away from the area.

"It's going to give it a bad rap. People are going to be skeptical about coming out here and they shouldn't," Garcia said.
