Workers at Albany's largest employer won't get bonuses they're accustomed to this year.
Phoebe Putney leaders say they've handed out more than $28 million since they started the bonus program more than ten years ago, but this year the hospital did not meet its financial goals. That means no incentive bonuses and no merit pay increases.
Phoebe spokesman Rick Smith said, "It's difficult anytime you don't make the money that you had set out to, in order to put back into the organization. It's difficult. Our employees work very hard."
Ironically, the cost of health care was a major reason why Phoebe didn't reach its fiscal year financial goal.
In a letter to employees, Phoebe CEO Joel Wernick said costs for the Phoebe Employee Health Plan were $15 million more than budgeted. He also said the hospital provided $20 million more in indigent care and bad debt write-offs than anticipated.
