Elderly rape suspect's charges upgraded

George Telfair George Telfair
OCILLA, GA (WALB) -

A man is in jail after authorities say he raped an elderly woman inside her home.

Charges against George Telfair have been upgraded to aggravated sexual battery, cruelty to elderly, kidnapping with injury, robbery by force and obstruction of a law enforcement officer.

Bond was denied. These charges carry maximum life sentences.

Crime scene investigators with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation spent Tuesday morning collecting evidence from a home on Alder Street in Ocilla after a brutal attack.

"We got called up here around 1:30 am to Alder Street in reference to an elderly female who had been assaulted," said Detective Ashley Jones. "She was taken to Tift Regional Hospital and is in stable condition."

Police say the victim, in her late 80's, answered a knock at her door around 10:30 Monday night and was attacked.

Right now we've got some good leads that we're following up on," said Jones.

By mid-morning Tuesday police had tracked down 51-year-old George Telfair to a known a drug area and noticed blood on his clothing. He was taken in for questioning and confessed to the crime. He is facing a host of serious charges including  rape, sodomy, burglary, kidnapping, and false imprisonment.

"This is shocking for the area. This is something you don't expect to happen here in Ocilla," said Jones.

Police say Telfair didn't know his elderly victim and it appears she was a random target.
