Albany city leaders approve $$$ for low-moderate income housing

ALBANY, GA (WALB) -
Albany city commissioners unanimously approved spending 89-thousand-dollars to help develop more low-to-moderate income housing.
Tuesday, commissioners approved the Home Investment Partnership Program money to help R&M Marketplace buy two single family homes. Heritage bank will contribute $212,000 to buy the properties at 413 Corn Avenue and 2407 Doncaster Drive and begin renovation.
The city will provide subsidies for the developers and help families buy the homes.
"It's essential, it really is. And the funding that we do have that we get from HUD is particularly for those who can't just go out to the bank and get the funding," said Shelena Hawkins, Department of Community & Economic Development Interim Director. "But we work with them through housing counseling, getting them ready for purchase of the housing. So this is a great partnership for the city as well as working with Heritage Bank."
Hawkins said the city has a hard time utilizing the grant money, but she said this project is a proactive way to attract private developers for families in need.
