Georgia Department of Transportation representatives say the off-ramp of the Liberty Expressway to Jefferson Street will be closed once work begins on the new interchange, and a new ramp to 91 will be built and placed in front of the current on-ramp in an effort to improve safety.
An alternative to the ramp has not yet been named.
Construction work began on the Jefferson interchange Monday. The project is expected to take two years to complete.
Transportation officials will answer questions about the Jefferson Street project in a public hearing Tuesday at the city-county government center. The public hearing begins at 5:30 p.m.
GDOT says the $12.5 million project will relocate the westbound exit and entrance to the bypass across from Philema Road. The intersection will require a new bridge over the railroad tracks and new bridge over North Jefferson. New turn lanes, sidewalks, and a raised median are also planned along Philema Road.
