Neighborhood wants to end home burglaries

ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

Police are investigating two burglaries in a south Albany neighborhood. They issued an alert earlier this week telling for west Albany residents to make sure they're homes are locked when they're away. They say the same thing applies to south Albany.

Community leader and activist Willie Ross, who has lived in South Albany for several years, says he's concerned because of a recent increase in burglaries, including two just last night.

"We had two houses next to each other broken into and they kicked in both back doors," said Willie Ross.

Albany police were called to two homes on Wells Avenue after they say two men stole a TV, and other items. Witnesses say they ran through the backyard and down the street.

The owner of the home next door says her house has been burglarized five times.

Now Ross wants to form an area watch program.

"I want the kids to be safe. We want to have a clean community. I want the community to learn like they did yesterday, dial 911," said Ross.

He says they're hoping police will help put an end to this problem.

"I'm asking everyone to be calm. If you see somebody breaking ton your house, please call the police," said Ross.

In the meantime, Albany police say it's important for people to lock their homes.

Mayor Hubbard says she and Albany Police Chief, John Proctor plan to meet Monday to come up with a solution to the increasing burglaries in South Albany.
