The Darton State College wrestler who had been fighting for his life after being hospitalized for heat exhaustion has died.

Family members say 20 year-old Ben Richards was pronounced dead at 5:30pm Friday at Shands Hospital in Gainesville, Florida. They say doctors declared him dead at 10:30am Friday, but he was kept on life support until other family members could arrive at the hospital.

Darton State College sent out a statement yesterday afternoon saying Richards had died, but then retracted their statement after learning he was still on life support.  Richards was hospitalized Wednesday, September 4th after he collapsed from heat exhaustion during a five mile run with teammates.

After being hospitalized at Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital for several days, he was airlifted to Shands Hospital in Gainesville.

Family members say his funeral will be in Tampa.  The family is accepting donations to help with medical expenses. If you would like to donate, click on the link below.
