Proud grandparents confident Mathis could be next Miss America


The family of Leesburg native and reigning Miss Georgia Carly Mathis say they are thrilled by the support she is receiving, as she competes in the Miss America Pageant at Atlantic City.

And so far she is one of the favorites. Carly Mathis won the swimsuit competition Thursday. The 22-year-old is promoting heart health and heart safety. Mathis receives $1,000 for winning the swimsuit competition.

Her grandparents, Reverend Hilton and Chris Gillespie, say they are feeling confident Carly will win.

Hilton Gillespie said "We fell like from the beginning that she ought to be Miss America." Chris Gillespie said "If it was left up to us, she would be. But I'm sure everybody else feels that way that is up there." Hilton Gillesipie said "Because we feel like she is not only pretty on the outside, but she is a pretty person inside."

Miss Georgia Carly Mathis, who is graduate of U-G-A and Deerfield Windsor High School will vye for the Miss America crown Sunday night at 9. You can watch it on WALB ABC.
