FITZGERALD, GA (WALB) -

Peanut lovers across the nation are celebrating their favorite snacks Friday, September 13th for National Peanut Day.

Georgia is the number one producer of peanuts in the nation, and grew more than 3 Million-tons of the commodity last year.  Many may not know peanuts are not actually nuts, but are legumes.  But that doesn't stop peanut lovers from eating plenty of the product.

"I think it's great, 'cause everybody in the state of Georgia grows peanuts.  Yeah, plenty of money in peanuts," said Charles Burnham, a Fitzgerald Resident.

"I love them too.  I could eat them all day, 'cause it's a good source of protein, you know.  So I like them.  I eat them regularly," said Willie King, a Fitzgerald Resident.

The USDA estimated earlier this year that nearly 200,000 less peanut acreage was planted after record yields in 2012.

Growers are now gearing up for harvest season.  And peanut lovers say they'll keep eating the snack that's low in cholesterol.
