(RNN) – JK Rowling hasn't left the world of wizards, witches and muggles behind completely.

Warner Bros. announced Thursday the best-selling author will write the screenplays for a series of movies from the world of Harry Potter. The movies will be based on a textbook studied by Harry, Ron and Hermione (well, mostly Hermione) at Hogwarts titled Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them by Newt Scamander.

"Although it will be set in the worldwide community of witches and wizards where I was so happy for 17 years, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them is neither a prequel nor a sequel to the Harry Potter series, but an extension of the wizarding world," Rowling said in the news release.

According to Rowling, the series will begin in New York, 70 years before Harry Potter's story begins.

Although she consulted on the Harry Potter movies – the largest grossing film franchise in history – this is Rowling's debut as a screenwriter.

"Having lived for so long in my fictional universe, I feel very protective of it and I already knew a lot about Newt," Rowling said.

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them was released along with Quidditch Through the Ages in 2001 with the proceeds going the charity Comic Relief. The Tails of the Beadle Bard, the children's book featured in the seventh book Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, was published in 2008.

Along with the movies, Warner Bros. will be creating a video game and other merchandise.
