Georgia to form statewide fire service, standardize training

Georgia is forming a unified statewide fire service, aimed at fighting large fires like the one that started in Fitzgerald Thursday.

State Fire Marshal Dwayne Garriss attended today's training sessions at the Georgia Fire Service Conference at the Albany Civic Center.

He says part of the Georgia Fire Service Strategic Plan is to have all 628 fire departments across the state do more standardized training.

The idea is during an emergency, regional units can be called in and be ready to work together.

"We are now sharing that information, instead of trying to reinvent the wheel," said Georgia State Fire Marshal Dewayne Garris. "Everybody is sharing that information.  Learning from each other. And then passing it on. We're getting a better group together."

Garriss says the state training center in Forsyth and the coming fire and life safety lab will help Georgia firefighters be among the best trained in the nation.
