Board of Regents approves budget bump

ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

A reduction in the number of enrollments in Georgia's colleges and universities has forced the Georgia Board of Regents to ask for an increase in next year's budget.

Enrollment numbers were down 2.7% last year which created a $20 million shortfall in state funds.

The $49 million increase is part of a $1.93 billion budget proposal for next fiscal year which will go before the Governor for consideration.

"Now they do from time to time usually every year actually. Bond request for buildings and capitol type improvements. We have not gotten to that stage of the budget preparation this year. So I will look forward to having those discussions with the chancellor. We have a great university system in our state and I think everyone understands the importance of keeping it that way,"  said Gov. Nathan Deal

The request doesn't include $235.2 million needed for facilities within the university system, which was also approved by the board.
