Fitzgerald plant ravaged by massive fire

FITZGERALD, GA (WALB) -

Fire officials say around 11:00AM, the warehouse and the back of the Suncoast factory in Fitzgerald building caught fire. About 30 employees were evacuated. Some of the employees at are still shaken up.

At least one firefighter has been injured battling a fire at Suncoast Bedding.

Emergency management crews at the scene report one firefighter was taken to Phoebe Dorminy Medical Center with minor injuries. Officials report he suffered a laceration to his hand.

The factory is located on the east side of Fitzgerald on Peachtree Road.

The office manager there says all employees made it out of the building, which usually has 25 to 30 workers present during the day. No employee injuries were reported.

Eyewitnesses reported seeing thick black smoke five miles away from the fire.

Ben Hill County E-911 tells WALB their office has received a massive number of calls about the fire.

Fire officials say they were able to control the burn to just one area Thursday afternoon. Firefighters will be on scene as long as needed until the fire is completely out.  The warehouse is a total loss. Authorities say the production part of the building is still operational.

According to its website, the plant produces pine shavings to make animal bedding.
