Albany Police issue crime alert for West District

ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

Albany Police have seen an increase in burglaries and thefts in the western part of the city, and they want people who live there to be on alert.

Police officials have noticed the increase in areas like the 1400 and 1500 blocks of Avalon, Gillespie, and West Lincoln. Thieves are targeting storage buildings in backyards,....taking lawn equipment and tools.  Police are also seeing more thefts from unlocked cars.

"I think those are more crimes of opportunity," said APD Captain Angel Bradford.  "Because the majority of the cases, they are left unlocked or the windows are down.  People are leaving purses in the cars.  Laptops, guns, money.  In the cars. These are the things that are being taken."

Albany Police are asking homeowners to use caution.  Lock you storage buildings and your cars when you park them outside.  And take your valuables out of your car to protect them.
