NEWTON, GA (WALB) -

The GBI is investigating the death of an elderly Newton man in his home.

Newton Police found 87 year-old William Land dead in his home on Clearlake Road about noon Tuesday and immediately called in the GBI.

Agents refuse to tell us anything about his death, including whether they believe it's a crime and whether a killer may be on the loose.

Neighbors say Land was a good person and they're in shock.

"He was a good kind old man. He's actually got a garden. The peas are up high right now," said Mary Roach.

Clara Purvis said, "Yes, I'm shocked because he was a wonderful man. He helped around town with the commodities."

If you know anything about the death, investigators want you to call Newton Police at 734-5331 or the GBI office in Sylvester at 777-2080.
