Father presented with a cross in honor of his son

ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

It's a day the world will never forget.

"It wasn't a random tragedy, it was a conscionable act," said ceremony speaker.

Tuesday evening, South Georgians came out to the field of flags by the Albany mall to remember those killed on 9/11 and veterans who lost their lives during the war on terror.

"It was all about remembering those who are gone, remembering 9/11, remembering all of our fallen comrades that have helped keep this country free," said Larry Kelley, event attendee.

The crosses honor servicemen from the Albany area who died in various wars over the years.

"The crosses that are out there now it's our way of showing our appreciation to all those veterans who lost their lives in the war," said Bill Brooks, constructed crosses.

Tonight ceremony organizers presented Gene Sutton with a cross in honor of his son Steve, a Marine Lance Corporal from Leesburg killed in Afghanistan last year.

"It makes me feel proud you know that somebody still cares, I reckon this is what they say that the vets are never forgotten and this here means a lot to me really, they say I can do what I want to with it, and maybe I will ask the city of Leesburg that I could put it up right next to his statue," said Gene Sutton, Steve Sutton's father.

Bill Brooks helped construct the crosses and says presenting one to Gene Sutton is a way of saying "thank you" for his son's sacrifice.

"Giving an individual cross to Mr. Sutton is a way of just showing that we the citizens of Albany, and Dougherty and Lee Co appreciate the support that the families have of the veterans that were there and support them too because not only did they lose a loved one they have a lot to go through and we're part of that, we support them, we're behind them 100%," said Brooks.

All saying thank you to those who served our country so bravely.
