ATC ranks as a top first responder program

ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

Albany Technical College is recognized by Fire Science Online as having one of the best first responder programs in the country.

Albany Tech's Fire Science program teaches students how to save lives. The program was named in a national online publication as one of the top 100 first responder programs in the country.

"So we have a goal to reach and we reached that goal. Our last emergency medical class had a 100 pass rate," said Don Laye, Director of Fire Science Technology Program.

Albany Tech offers 8 first responder's courses. Don Laye, Director of the Fire Science Tech program, says it's the teachers that set this program apart and they seek only the best.

"We make the point that our instructors have the in-service education. Also reaching a level above and beyond," said Don Laye.

The first responder program at Albany Tech gets students ready for their real jobs.

"We do live burns. We do all of the training with ladders, search and rescue. We're excited about our training facility here. They get all the hands on training they need," said Don Laye, Director of Fire Science Technology Program.

Albany Tech was selected out of 2,500 schools. In this growing program, Don Laye believes graduates can take the skills they've learned and use them anywhere.

"If they pass the national certification, not only in Albany and Southwest Georgia area but anywhere in the United States," said Don Laye.

Laye says the program will continue to rise to the top.

Albany Tech officials say they have state of the art equipment that instructors use to teach students.

According to Firescience.org, Albany Technical College ranks 87th on the list. 8 other colleges and universities from Georgia made the list.
