ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

It's a new school year, meaning new clothes, new glasses and...a hearing aid? That's something parents could be facing if they don't get their child's ears checked. It's a growing problem among young children and teens.

"Due to gunfire down here in the South, there have been a lot of kids that have done a lot hunting and shooting over the years...ipods and mp3 players," Dr. Doug Lorber of Albany Audiology and Hearing Center said.

A hearing checkup is critical to their learning environment. If a student can't hear their teacher it can prevent them from work, confuse them or...

"They can be labeled as a behavior problem when they simply didn't hear the instructions in the first place," Dr. Lorber said.

There are several different reasons why a child could have difficulty hearing. It can be as simple as ear wax buildup, sinus and allergy problems, even genetics can play a role. But CAPD, Central Auditory Processing Disorder, is one parents should be aware of. It's when the brain can't process what child is hearing, making it hard for them to follow directions.

"A lot of these things don't cause pain so a child may not complain to a parent, 'Hey my ear hurts'...they just think that it's a natural progression," Dr. Lorber continues.

However, your audiologist can offer pre-tests to help determine if CAPD is present. It's just one more way to help your child stay focused.
