SYLVESTER, GA (WALB) -

Sylvester Police report that a man who was cleaning a pistol, and another man nearby, had to be treated for gunshot wounds Wednesday.

Curtis Creel was holding a .40 caliber pistol in the kitchen of the Lakeview Drive house, when it discharged. The bullet hit his hand, and a cellphone, and lodged in Jonathan Long's thigh. Creel is a former detention officer with the Lee Co. Sheriff's Office.

Both men were taken to Phoebe Putney for treatment, and the wounds were not life-threatening.

The Sylvester Police Department issued this news release-

On September 4, 2013 at 9:53 p.m., Sylvester Police Units and Worth County E.M.S. were dispatched to 316 Lakeview Drive in reference to an accidental shooting. 

 Jonathan Long, 22 years of age, who lives at 316 Lakeview Drive and Curtis Creel, 20 years of age, who lives at 315 Lakeview Drive, were at the residence. 

Both individuals were in the kitchen area of the residence, clearing and cleaning some handguns when the .40 caliber handgun Creel was holding, accidentally fired. 

The projectile struck Creel in the hand, went through a cell phone, and into the thigh of Long. 

Both subjects were transported by Worth County E.M.S. to Phoebe Hospitals for treatment.  No charges will be filed.
