No surprise here: Rivers named ASU's starting QB

In a move expected by many, Albany State has named transfer junior Frank Rivers the Golden Rams' starting quarterback.

Offensive coordinator Steve Smith tells WALB Rivers will be the number one QB heading into ASU's season opener at North Greenville.

Many felt Rivers was the clear favorite after transferring in from FCS Grambling State, where he played in 10 games and led the Tigers in passing in 2012.

However, Smith kept the competition open during the preseason and held off naming a starter until four days before Saturday's opener.

Rivers threw for 1018 yards and seven touchdowns in 2012, posting a 118.8 QB rating.

Smith says senior Rodney Castlin will be the backup.
