41 year old Clayton Akridge of Dougherty County was killed around 11:30 Sunday night on Pleasant Grove Church Road near Gravel Hill Road in Mitchell County. Troopers say Akridge drove through the intersection and struck a tree. He was not wearing his seat belt.
A Moultrie truck driver was also killed in Worth County and a Tifton man died in a crash in Berrien County in a suspected DUI crash. Troopers arrested more than 225 drivers on DUI charges and hope motorists learn from those high numbers.
" The number of people driving under the influence. Learn that that doesn't work out here. It's not a safe thing to do. And in the future they would take time and plan their trips and obey the speed limit," said Corporal Andrew McKenzie of the GSP.
The Georgia State Patrol investigated 443 crashes, resulting in 226 injuries. Troopers say the traffic was surprisingly heavy in South Georgia.
