ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

Dougherty High School celebrated a milestone Saturday.

The community came out to celebrate Dougherty High Schools' 50th anniversary. The school opened in 1963. Former alumni from years past came out for a cook-out on the schools grounds. Organizers say former Dougherty students set an example for the younger generation.

"There are some people who made it through this same neighborhood. They made it through the same struggles and conditions they made it through and their successful in their lives. The kids can see that, so they'll take on some of the traits that these older men and women done," said Coach Corey Joiner.

A pep rally in the school's gym was held later in the afternoon.
