THOMASVILLE, GA (WALB) -

43-year old James Deryl Ouzts was arrested Thursday charged with felony theft by taking.

Ouzts is the treasurer for the Thomasville High School Band Boosters and was the Director of Student Life at Thomas University. That school says that he is no longer employed there.

According to the Thomasville Police Department, Ouzts is accused of stealing more than $40,000 from the band boosters during his time as treasurer.

Investigators say they were called by the booster club because the numbers were not adding up. Investigators determined Ouzts was taking money from the organization and writing personal checks to himself.

Investigators say Ouzts has returned a portion of the stolen funds and is cooperating with police in recovering the rest of it.

Ouzts was released on a $7,600 dollar bond.
