Bidding open for Southside Library occupancy

ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

The former Southside Library in Albany may have some new tenants. The Dougherty County Commission is taking proposals from nonprofit organizations and businesses to take over the building.

Thursday, a walk through was held to let bidders see the building.

Potential renters are checking out the Southside Library as a potential home for their organizations. County commissioners are opening the doors back up for the public to use.

"We had at least 5 different organizations that were interested. So we do know there are large groups that are interested in the building," said Roselyn Daniel, Procurement Specialist.

Lorene Thomas is ready to make a bid on the empty building to use it as a shelter ministry for her church.

"I had never actually taken a look at it objectively and to see what it would look like, how we can use this facility for what I have in mind," said Lorene Thomas.

Anyone interested in using the building must submit a proposal to the county. There are several factors in deciding the next occupant.

"Not exactly the highest bidder, but your organization, what you're planning to do here," said Roselyn Daniel.

Bidders know if they move in, it may not be a permanent situation.

Even if a business or nonprofit organization decides to rent the building, the Dougherty County Commission can still decide to re-open the Southside Library.

The library has been closed for over a year, but it's in good shape for a business.

"There are a few things that needs to be addressed, but for the most part, yes its ready to be used, ready to be leased out," said Dwayne Greene, Director of Facility Management.

Whoever wins the bids will take over all expenses of the building.

All bids to lease the Southside Library need to be in the county administrators' office by 5 p.m. September 12.
