VALDOSTA, GA (WALB) -

Valdosta firefighters say someone set fire to a home and all of its exit doors early Wednesday morning.

Officials say it happened around 2:45 a.m. at a home on Morningside Drive. Five people including two children were inside the home at the time.

Valdosta firefighters say whoever lit this home on fire was trying to keep the people inside from escaping.

Alfred Preston was inside at the time. "I went through the house screaming like come on y'all get up we have to get out of here the house is on fire."

He says he was most worried for the 6 and 12 year old children inside, whose bedroom was the closest to catching on fire.

"The fire would have hit them before it hit anybody else. I'm thankful for the kids to be alive most of all," Preston said.

Fire investigators say the cushion on a chair was lit on fire, as well as a pizza box found at the back door.

"We've learned in this business that you don't have to be a rocket scientist to set a fire," said Valdosta Fire Investigator  Lt. Edgar Tooley. "That's a serious serious crime because people could have actually lost their life, over whatever caused this to happen."

Preston says he wishes whoever started the fire would have thought twice. "Before you do something like this, try to burn a house down, you've got to think about the children in here."

Right now officials don't have a motive but are interviewing the residents to find out more.

If you have any information that could help Valdosta firefighters catch the arsonist, call them at 333-1853.
