(Toledo News Now) -

Local congressmen are closely watching developments in Syria.

U.S. Rep. Bob Latta, R-Ohio, spoke at Owens Community College Tuesday about events in Syria.

Latta called the suspected chemical attack a travesty. He says he saw the horrific video of bodies on the ground, which included young children. Latta says President Obama has the ability under the War Power Act to take military action against Syria, but he is demanding that the president first consult with Congress.

The congressman believes something must be done to punish the Syrian regime, as long as Congress is included in the deliberations.

"They are using gas against their own people and we can't allow that to continue. We can't allow that to happen," he said. "We really need to have some discussions, as members, as a conference on our side…I think that's something that we need to do, to make sure we have all the facts out there."

U.S. Rep. Marcy Kaptur, D-Ohio, also said Congress should be consulted first, and says she wonders what Syria could become if there's a regime change, as well as if there would be retaliation.
