GA suspects arrested in massive multi-state dog fighting ring

VALDOSTA, GA (WALB) -

A Georgia man and woman are facing charges along with eight others in an illegal dog fighting ring investigation spanning three years and four states.

The investigation initiated 13 search warrants throughout Alabama, Mississippi, Georgia, and Texas. Ten suspects were arrested and indicted on felony dog fighting charges after the warrants were executed on Friday.

Officials also seized weapons and drugs, as well as more than $500,000 in cash from dog fighting gambling activities.

Authorities say they believe this raid is the second largest dog fighting raid in U.S. history.

In Georgia, Raymond Lee Hendrix, 36, is charged with dog fighting and possession of tools for commission of a crime and Tara Hunt, 39, has been charged with party to a crime (dog fighting).

Echols County Sheriff's investigators with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation raided the couple's Valdosta home on Copeland Road early Friday morning, revealing kennels and nine pit bull dogs. The dogs were described in various conditions, some with noticeable scarring on the head and legs from apparent fighting.

Agents also seized training equipment used to condition dogs for fights.

Hendrix and Hunt were taken to the Lowndes County Jail.

The Humane Society of the United States has taken possession of the dogs.
