SWGTC Foundation awards $30K in scholarships

THOMASVILLE, GA (WALB) -

Applications for scholarships continue to pour in to one south Georgia college's foundation, as students learn what this semester's education will cost.

So far this semester, The Southwest Georgia Technical College Foundation has awarded more than $30,000 in scholarships.

School officials say the need for these funds is on the rise, because of federal and state cuts and the high cost of supplies.

"We're seeing a large increase in students that come in needing additional financial assistance to be able to complete their program. Whether that is just to buy books or to help with tuition and fees or some students in some cases need additional school supplies like scrubs or additional books or other things that they did not anticipate needing," said Institutional Advancement Director Amy Maison.

Funds for these scholarships come from individual and corporate donors in the community.
