Contractors have begun making improvements to the Withlacoochee Wastewater Treatment Plant in Valdosta until the relocation of the plant is complete.
It won't be until the end of 2015 that the plant can be moved to higher ground. But in the meantime, to prevent sewage spills and flooding issues, city officials are implementing seven $2.5 million short term projects.
Friday contractors were out installing bar screens that will help collect plastics, and large solids from entering the sewage system.
"These improvements out here are helping us handle the high volume of sewer flow, actually combined, its not only sewer but its also storm water, that we see during high rain events," said Jason Scarpate, Assistant Director of Utilities.
The short term projects are expected to be competed in the next 2 to 8 months.
