Former Albany nurse sentenced in embezzlement case

MACON, GA (WALB) -

An Albany nurse formerly employed by Phoebe Putney Home Health Care who admitted to stealing and cashing other people's Internal Revenue Service refund checks has been sentenced to five years and 10 months in Federal prison.

The sentence was handed down Thursday. Melody Milton, 38, of Albany pleaded guilty to embezzlement of government property and aggravated identity theft in August 2012. In addition to her sentence, she was ordered to pay $110,431 in restitution to the IRS.

Milton told investigators that she opened bank accounts in the name of "Quick Cash Check Cashing" at two Albany Banks for the purpose of facilitating the illegal scheme.

A release showed that Milton fraudulently obtained IRS refund checks at a post office box that she opened to receive the checks directly.

Many of the checks she received were from her own patients while she was employed at Phoebe Home Health Care.

Officials say she would then negotiate the checks for her own use by depositing them into the bank accounts which were controlled by her.

The value of the Treasury checks totaled $282,428.
