ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

Thursday night leaders and residents gathered in Albany to honor a judge, who was appointed to the Georgia court of appeals as chief judge.

The Dougherty Circuit Bar Association hosted a reception tonight to honor Judge Herbert Phipps. He grew up in Albany, and then attended Morehouse College in Atlanta to earn his bachelor's degree. Judge Phipps then went on to earn his law degree at Case Western.

He's now the 25th Chief Judge of the Georgia Court of Appeals.

"It's a great honor to be recognized and appreciated by the people at home, the people that you grew up around people that you developed your professional career around, it's a great honor," said Herbert Phipps, Chief Judge, Georgia Court of Appeals.

Congressman Sanford Bishop, Mayor Hubbard, as well as other south Georgia leaders attended Thursday nights event.
