Man dead for days in apartment identified

After several days of trying to track down family members, police Wednesday identified the man found dead Sunday inside a downtown Albany apartment.

48-year-old Michael Gene Odell's body was found in a unit in a building in the 400 block of North Jackson Street after a neighbor reported a foul odor coming from the room.

Police said he had been dead for sometime and working to figure out if foul play was involved in his dead.

The building where the body was found was condemned Tuesday.

Code enforcement officers, wearing masks to protect themselves, placed signs on all the entrances warning people not to go inside.

Three people who lived there were told to leave.

Code enforcers say the building is not safe to live in but poses no danger to the neighborhood.

Investigators are calling Odell's death "suspicious" as they wait for autopsy results.
