ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

Workers at a new pain clinic in Albany support a new law designed to try to cut down on the number of prescription pills sold illegally on the streets. The law designed to crack down on so-called pill mills went into effect July 1.

It means places like the new Nexus Pain Center must be owned by a doctor and are required to register with the state and renew that license every two years.

Lead Physician Dr. Joe Matthews says the clinic doesn't want to treat people who don't legitimately need pain medication. "We're not out to do that. What we're out to do is treat pain. And if you had the pain, I want you to have a way to get that medicine if you need it," Matthews said.

The Nexus Pain Center of Albany on Meredyth Drive celebrated its grand opening Tuesday night. It specializes in helping people overcome chronic and acute pain.

In addition to Dr. Matthews, the center has six other employees.
