ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

The heavy rain that has poured throughout Southwest Georgia has resulted in more trees causing damage throughout the region. The heavily saturated grounds are making it easier for these trees to fall and cause damage.

"A bunch of trees are going down right now," said Lee Harper of Harper's Tree Service. "We got saturated grounds, with a little less wind. You don't need to have wind to make a tree come down. These saturated grounds, the weight from the trees, they will tumble on down without any wind."

Jim Adkison, who has a 22-acre cotton crop in Albany almost suffered severe damage this weekend thanks to the rain.  A tree that had been standing amongst the cotton crop hit the ground following this weekend's storm.

Fortunately, the absence of the tree will now benefit its crop.

"It took a lot of water this old tree," Adkison said. "It sapped out the water from way out. The crop over there didn't get very big because this took the water from it."

Officials says to be cautious of certain signs to avoid damage from a tree falling.

"You'll see like a cancer spine down the side of it," Harper said. "You'll have a little rotten on the bottom, that shows you that it's dying."

All tree trimming or removal work within ten feet of a power line must be done by trained line-clearance tree trimmers.
