Tired Creek Lake finally breaks ground

Construction on a 960-acre recreational lake, decades in the making in Grady County, finally begins.

Congressman Sanford Bishop joined community leaders for the groundbreaking for Tired Creek Lake Tuesday.

Congressman Sanford Bishop says he never thought he could be this happy to toss up piles of dirt with his constituents.

"This is a labor of love that has been going on with a vision over 60 years and we have now come to the point where we are actually breaking ground."

Tuesday morning's groundbreaking was first dreamed up in the 1930's, but permit and financial restrictions stalled the project.

"Nobody ever really said no. They would say no, but no is a maybe. And maybe is a sure thing if you pursue it," said County Commissioner Charlie Norton.

The project was picked back up in 2001 by Norton and lead consultant Tommy Craig.

But it would take another 9 years to achieve the necessary permits.

"If it hadn't been for Tommy and his firm getting through the legal ends of it, and know which courses to take, I don't think it would ever happen," said Norton.

"Charlie Norton has been the heart beat of the project. He's been the flame that has kept the firing burning. He has shown more persistence and determination to get this done than everybody else all put together," said Craig.

And Grady County's first female county commissioner says the economic impacts of the lake are already being felt.

"I'm 100 percent behind the lake authority. The Tired Creek Lake is going to be a success. It's going to bring in revenue. People are already calling. Coming down visiting. Waiting to see the sight where the lake is going to be so they can get their boat out on the water," said Commissioner Lafaye Copeland.

Economic experts predict the revenue brought in, just from the fishing alone, will reach about $1 million a year.

The lake is expected to be completed within three years.
