(RNN) - A church has fired its 26-year-old pastor for attending a concert by a rapper it believes is "tearing down the kingdom of God."

Pastor Rodney Wills, who had been preaching for four years at Mt. Salem Baptist Church in North Carolina, was the youngest pastor the 109-year-old church ever had. But after Wills attended a concert by Rick Ross, a former corrections officer turned rapper who is often associated with controversy, the church deacons voted him out, reported the Guardian Express.

The church's Deacon Miles Langley said, "We cannot have our leader supporting people of this world who are tearing down the kingdom of God."

According to Langley, this wasn't the first time the young pastor attended a musical performance. Nine months previously, Wills was warned about his attendance of a Lil' Wayne concert.

"We know that many saints will have mixed opinions from our actions, but this is not how we do things here at Mt. Salem," Langley told the Guardian Express. "We cannot have a pastor praising the world one minute then praising the Lord the next. Period."

UrbanFaith.com questioned the firing, saying, "Maybe Wills wanted to keep up with what the youth of the church are listening to so that he could connect with them on a particular level."

Rick Ross, probably best-known for his hit song Hustlin', was widely criticized earlier this year for having lyrics in a song which many people believed to be a praise of rape.

In the song, U.O.E.N.O. which featured several other performers, Ross says: "Put Molly all in her Champagne/ She ain't even know it/ I took her home and I enjoyed that/ She ain't even know it."

In response to the controversy, producers of the song released a new version that omitted Ross. In addition, and of more financial consequence for Ross, Reebok dropped the rapper from a sponsorship deal after women's rights groups protested in front of their New York offices, reported Spin.

Ross has since apologized for the lyrics.
