ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

Albany city leaders will pay roughly $1.2 Million to replace a storm drain in an area prone to flooding.

Tuesday, commissioners approved the bid from Oxford Construction Company to replace thousands of feet of pipe along Roosevelt Avenue near Pine Street.

Commissioners chose say it was the lowest of three bids.  The project's planners said heavy storms have made the area an issue of concern with standing water up to a foot deep.

"It's been designated by the commission to alleviate the flooding on Holloway and this is a headwaters with the Holloway basin.  So hopefully it'll take some of the storm water off the Holloway headwaters and help alleviate some of the problems further down the stream," said John Shepherd, Project Manager.

Shepherd said crews could begin working by late September and finish the work by the end of the year if everything goes smoothly.

Commissioners will take their final vote at their next meeting.
