ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

The new terminal at Southwest Georgia Regional Airport will finally open Wednesday after 16 months of construction and a couple of brief delays.

Right now, workers are busy getting the building ready.

A sprinkler system leak then a failed building inspection pushed the opening back.  But everything is on track for the first passengers to walk through the terminal first thing tomorrow morning.

The airport director said the new terminal could attract new industries to Albany.  She said the airport serves as the welcome to tourists and outside businesses visiting the area.

Now, crews are busy moving boxes and equipment into the new building.  And they're putting the final touches, all for the first passengers who walk in the door Wednesday morning.

"It's not entirely over, we still have the last phase of construction where we're gonna demolish the current building and build parking areas.  But phase two being over, that is a big deal to us, so I'm very proud of what we've been able to accomplish," said Yvette Aehle, Airport Director.

Aehle said the last phase is an eight month long process.  The old building was more than 50-years old, and will become one of the parking areas once it's torn down.

She said she's thankful to the workers for all their hard work and to the voters for approving SPLOST VI money that paid for 30% of the building.

The first flight will leave at 6am.  Aehle said it's about half full, and said passengers will likely be greeted with some coffee for the first flight.
