ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

An effort to help South Georgia hospitals save money will create up to 50 jobs in Albany.

On Monday, the Payroll Development Authority approved selling 10 acres of land in the Pecan Grove Corporate Park on Newton Road to Phoebe Putney Health System for $150,000.

Phoebe will turn the property into a wholesale warehouse, allowing cooperative-member hospitals to get better deals on supplies by buying in bulk. County leaders hope the facility will attract other businesses to south Albany.

"In that part of the county, we don't have retail that's readily available for the folks that live throughout that area. Consequently, the more traffic and the more folks that are coming to that area to work, the more opportunity for retail to locate there," said Dougherty County Commission Chairman Jeff Sinyard.

Sinyard says a vacant retail plaza near the industrial park could benefit most from the development.

The agreement requires that construction begin within the next twelve months.
