DCSS says no to guns in schools

ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

As students return to class, teachers will be armed in a few schools around the country. That's still not allowed in Georgia.

The last thing school officials say students and teachers should worry about is safety. Some leaders in Dougherty County don't think arming teachers is the best way to keep schools safe.

After the shooting in Newtown, Connecticut last year, some schools systems went so far as to arm their teachers and staff with guns. Dougherty County Schools Police Chief Troy Conley doesn't think that's a good idea.

"Mainly because it causes concerns when you have additional weapons on campus. There are a lot of things that come into play when you have to secure weapons," said Troy Conley.

Interim Superintendent, Dr. Mosely agrees guns and teachers just don't mix.

"Some people don't have the temperament to hold their temper during a crisis and I'm just violently opposed to that," said Dr. Mosely.

Conley says teachers can help protect their students in an emergency situation without using guns.

"The teachers are trained to take certain steps to first secure the safety of the students and then themselves," said Troy Conley.

Mosely says there were lessons learned from the Sandy Hook shooting. He says most Georgia school superintendents are against having loaded guns in the hands of teachers and administrators.

"We take this very seriously, I can tell you that. But we're going to do all we can to secure our boundaries and play hardball with those who choose to violate our rules," said Dr. Mosley.

Dr. Mosley says the schools here are safe as they can be. Officers have measures in place to protect our schools so teachers won't have to.

Dr. Mosley says he anticipates a great school year without any disruptions. He doesn't think a law allowing teachers to bring guns to school will pass in Georgia any time soon.

Each Dougherty County middle school has an armed police officer on campus. Each high school has two. Officers are not stationed full-time at elementary schools.
