ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

A Phoebe Putney physician was acknowledged nationally last month for his medical work in helping patients heal their wounds.

Dr. Thomas M. Bozzuto, Phoebe's Wound Care and Hyperbarics Center Medical Director, was awarded a Fellowship in the Undersea and Hyperbaric Medical Society at its Annual Scientific Assembly in Orlando.

He is one of only 35 board certified Physicians from across the country that received the award out of 500 to date.

Bozzuto has been working with hyperbaric oxygen therapy for over 25 years, using pressurized chambers to treat patients by the development of new blood vessels. The treatment helps with healing wounds, decompression sickness, carbon monoxide poisoning and other sickness or injury by having patients breathe 100 percent oxygen at atmospheric pressure.

"I think what it does to me is it validates what I've been trying to do," said Bozzuto. "Helping the patients and that we're doing the right thing to get people better with the Hyperbarics treatment."

Recently, Bozzuto says he also helped restore income for Hyperbarics Physicians by attending a discussion with the Health Finance committee and Medicare representatives in Maryland, after they initially decided physicians were not necessary for the treatment.

The Medical Director will also become the President of the Georgia Osteopathic Medical Society at their annual meeting in October.
