National night out prepares students for first day of class

Hundreds of students are prepared for the first day of school, thanks to first responders.

The Dougherty County Police Department led a school supply drive and gave away 1200 bags of supplies on Thursday night.

New Birth Fellowship also handed out book bags to the kids.

The families say they're grateful for the help, and officers say it's important for them to try to meet needs they see in the community.

"It's been very beneficial, it helps because we're going through hard times right now so it's kind of hard to get some school supplies for the kids, so they really wouldn't have had anything if it wasn't for this event," said Daquan Durant and his family.

The school supply giveaway was part of Thursday's National Night Out celebration at Radium Middle School that included food and lots of family fun.
The County police department, Sheriff's office, EMS and fire department all took part to build better relationships with the people they serve.
