ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

Dougherty County Sheriff's Office is warning everyone to watch out for scam text messages claiming your credit or debit card numbers have been stolen.

Sherri Smith of Lee County got one of those texts telling her to call a Miami, Florida number.

An answering machine told her she had been the victim of a technical error on her credit card and she needed to punch in her credit card number.

She didn't fall for it.

Investigators remind you never to give your personal or banking information on the phone.

"It's when they tell you send us your debit card numbers or your credit card numbers.  Your company knows your credit card number.  There is no reason for them to ask you for it. Or any other personal information or banking information," says Craig Dodd with the Dougherty County Sheriff's office

If you ever have a question about your credit or debit card, call the customer service number on the back of the card to make sure you're talking to the right people.
