ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

With a multi-million dollar racing facility coming to Americus, South Georgia Technical College is preparing students for careers in the racing world. South Georgia Technical College is putting the pedal to the metal as they are preparing students in their "Rev up your career" course to enter the fast pace world of racing.

"The intent is to give students the opportunity to learn what it would be like to have an entry level position in a motorsports program or racing team," said Vice President of Institutional Advancement Su Ann Bird.

In this 27,000 sq foot warehouse students build race cars that can go as fast as 200 miles per hour.

"They can get jobs with race tracks, engine builders, chassis fabrication, and run their own business along with running a race track," said Instructor Kevin Beaver.

Students are receiving hands on training with the racing world's best equipment.

"The equipment is very expensive, our machine shop equipment runs $20,000 to $25,000 per piece of equipment, the dyno behind me is about $55,000," said Beaver.

Commercial truck drivers are needed for race teams as well, and money is added to a student's HOPE grant if they are interested in the field.

"If they are in the commercial truck driving they will receive an extra $1,000," said Bird.

College officials say this course is needed at a time when the 470 acre Americus Motorsports Complex is soon to break ground.

"Right here in our motorsports complex we can build motorcycles and race cars and take them across the street and race," said South Georgia Technical College President Sparky Reeves.

Americus Motorsports Complex officials say they are excited about the partnership.

"South Georgia Technical college can build the employees right across the street and find a job for them without even having to go out of the area," said Star Racing Owner George Bryce.

College officials say the "Rev Up Your Career" course has been successful the past four years and that they are excited for their students future in the racing world. South Georgia Technical College says they will have 25 students enrolled in their "Rev Up Your Career" course this fall.
