Moultrie store clerk robbed with shovel

Police think before Luis Gonzalez committed the smash and grab at Belk, he robbed a Moultrie store clerk using a shovel from inside the store.

Moultrie Police say Luis Gonzalez just moved to Moultrie about a month ago, but they say he's been busy ever since committing crimes.

Moultrie Police say Luis Gonzalez walked up to the register at Family Dollar on 1st Avenue Southeast and demanded money from the clerk. Police are glad to get him off the streets.

"He burglarized several Hispanic stores in Moultrie and he has several warrants for him prior to the robbery and the Belk incident," said Moultrie Police Cpl. Raul Leal.

This family dollar robbery happened Monday afternoon.

A shovel was used as Gonzalez's weapon of choice to scare the employee and to get her to hand over the cash.

Gonzalez left with the money and the store clerk quickly called police. They say they identified Gonzalez as a suspect in several other crimes from witnesses.

In some of the cases, they don't think Gonzalez was working alone.

"This is a group of three people at least working together with these crimes," said Cpl. Raul Leal.

Gonzalez is facing several burglary and robbery charges and police suspect drugs as a reason that Gonzalez is committing these crimes.

"Right now we don't know what exact drug he's consuming, but we know he's a drug addict," Cpl. Raul Leal.

Police say about $400 was taken from the store. Gonzalez and his accomplices are behind bars tonight. No one was hurt in the Family Dollar robbery.

Moultrie Police questioned Gonzalez this afternoon as they continue to try to figure out how many crimes they'll charge him with.
