MOULTRIE, GA (WALB) -

A WALB website viewer is being credited with helping in the arrest of a suspect in a Colquitt County theft.

We showed you the surveillance video Monday of a man police say was committing thefts at a home. Today we learned he was after lawn equipment.

It was the video of the camo-clad theft suspect that led to his arrest. Shortly after we aired it and posted it on walb.com, sheriff's investigators say he came to them.

"The suspect was informed he was on the news and he came to us with the stolen equipment," said Lt. Shawn Bostick of the Colquitt County Sheriff's Office.

Investigators say the man in the video is Brandon Fields, and he admitted stealing thousands of dollars worth of lawn equipment from two rural Colquitt County homes.

"Trimmers, blowers, saws, mowers, things like that. He (loaded them onto) a trailer," said Bostick.

While the attention to the video ultimately led to Fields surrendering, it was the security camera outside the home which aided in the investigation. Without it, he may have gotten away.

"We're seeing a growing trend towards homes implementing this video surveillance. I think it's a great tool. This is an example of incident in which it led to an arrest and property was recovered," said Bostick.

Now Fields will await trial on felony charges of two counts of second degree burglary and one count of theft.
