VALDOSTA, GA (WALB) -

The winner of Georgia's Best Grocery Bagger competition works right out of the Harvey's Supermarket in Valdosta. She's preparing to head to Las Vegas where she'll compete in the national bagging competition.

While checking out at the grocery store you may not have realized that bagging groceries is a true art form. And for 23-year-old Lindsey Purvis it's paying off.

Lindsey is the winner of Georgia's Best Grocery Bagging competition. She's worked at the Harvey's on Bemiss Road for four years and has been training hard for the past four months.

"Good job Lindsey, 29.62 seconds," said her coach Lynn Gaskins.

To win this title she had to focus on some very specific techniques.

"You want to build your walls so that your bag will stand. Make sure your glasses have a packet in between the glass because you don't want it touching. Then you want your filler items in so there's no glass on the outside of the bag," said Purvis.

But when dealing with customers she has to take a slower pace.

"For customers you don't want to bag that fast because you don't want to mess up all their product," said Purvis.

Her coach Lynn Gaskins says they take this competition seriously. "We work on speed, we work on bag technique, weight distribution, and our appearance. We've practiced for months."

In the store it's crucial to bag properly for food safety reasons, and making sure customer's take their groceries home without damage.

As for Purvis she won $2,000 at states; money she plans to use to go to college.

If Purvis wins the national competition in Vegas she'll go home with $10,000, a gold cash register with her name on it, and a trip to New York to be on the Jay Leno show.
