Auto racer Nichols speeds way to 6th title

ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

Albany auto racer Skip Nichols has dominated the Thursday Thunder Masters' series at Atlanta.

On Thursday, Nichols earned his fifth win of the 2013 season on his way to another series title.

That makes it six Masters Series titles for Nichols, and his seventh overall Thursday Thunder title.

With his latest championship, Nichols has won six titles in the 12 seasons he's raced in the series.

Thursday Thunder runs 10 races during the summer at Atlanta Motor Speedway in June and July.

It's a historic run that Nichols says is special because he's been able to include his family with him.

"They're up there every time cheering me on, but they're also helping me with my car," Nichols says.

"I probably have one of the youngest crew chiefs in the world, my [eight year old] grandson Wilder," he laughs. "He was two weeks old when he first came to the racetrack up there, and I actually won the race the night that he came. He started being my crew chief that night."

Wilder will begin racing in the Bandeleros series at Thursday Thunder soon, Nichols beams.

And it's Wilder, as well as one final goal, that will keep Nichols in the Masters' series for one more season.

"I've got 49 wins in Thursday Night Thunder as a Masters' racer," Nichols says. "That's more wins than any other two people combined in any divisions. I'm looking for that 50th win."

But he says it was also Wilder's hope that he would race one more year.

"He told me he wanted me to race one more year with him," Nichols says. "I've talked about several years to give it up because there's other things we'd like to do. But I'm looking forward to being Wilder's crew chief."
