History is made by Darton's first class of bachelor's degree recipients

ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

A historic night happened on Thursday at Darton State College. The school handed out four year degrees for the first time. The nursing program is the first on the college's campus to offer a four year degree.

"Thrilled, thrilled, really thrilled," said April Reese, the Dean of Nursing when speaking about Thursday night's event.

"It's wonderful, great man; it's a wonderful feeling," said Malcolm Williams, the husband of one the nursing graduates.

All for students who worked hard to obtain their degrees.

"It feels incredible it's been a long journey, it's a challenging program," said Kenneth Stack, a graduate of the program.

"I'm very excited, this is my 2nd degree from Darton, first 4 year degree class which is a very exciting thing, we're really excited to be a part of a very special day," said Julie Simons, also a graduate of the program.

And while this is a special day for the students, it's also a special day for Darton, this is their first class graduating with bachelor's degrees

"Very exciting, this is our first baccalaureate class at Darton State College, for the nursing division and we're just thrilled to have this class graduating, it's been a long time coming," said Dean Reese.

As Darton works to add more four year programs, these new graduates are ready to make a mark in the world.

"We're given tools to be a leader; I want to use that going forward to become a leader, not only in my unit, but to explore other avenues of nursing," said kenneth stack

"I took a leadership job, so I'm going to keep doing that and see what happens," said Simons.

School leaders hope some of Thursday's graduates will one day return to the campus that helped them become who they are.

"We hope that some of these students get their Masters and come back to teach," said Dean Reese.

Seventeen bachelor degrees were conferred as well as 51 Associate degrees.
