THOMASVILLE, GA (WALB) -

It's not a great time to be looking for a job.

Southwest Georgia's unemployment rate rose to 9.9 percent in June, up from 9.1 percent in May.

Labor officials attribute the jump to new college graduates, people re-entering the job market, and education workers who are considered unemployed during the summer.

Jobseeker Roderick Williams says while he has been struggling to find a job for four months now, he is not willing to settle.

"You gotta find a job you enjoy doing. It's not all about the money. Its gotta be something you are looking forward to every morning."

Williams and hundreds others like him showcased their credentials Thursday at the annual Goodwill Job fair in Thomasville.

"I think we have more people seeking jobs than last year. From preliminary count and we try to keep up with people coming through," said Fair Organizer David Brook.

Organizers say while they have about the same amount of employers as last year, many of them are different and from farther away.

Like this Ingalls Shipbuilding representative Mark Mcgruder.

"We know that we can't find everybody that we need in Pascagoula, Mississippi. So we are casting the net as wide as we can to find people that are both qualified and interested in working for us."

Mcgruder says contrary to popular belief there are tons of jobs available, but for folks with the right skills.

"There are not enough skilled, qualified welders, pipe fitters, pipe welders, electricians in the United States. People that have those skills are in very high demand."

And one independent consultant says some jobseekers need to think outside of the box.

"Don't always count on traditional jobs. Try to get something that you can do for yourself also," said Anthony Ward.

Williams tells us Thursday's fair was a success for him.

"You gotta keep going at it. You gotta show them that you want it."

Mcgruder says he plans to visit with recent and soon to be college graduates to help place them in high demand fields.

Metro Albany's unemployment rate increased to 10.2 percent in June, up from 9.5 percent in May.
